Only when they have enough trust and respect for the teachers will
they try to listen to the teachings. Parents often think that the teacher is about the same age or younger than themselves, thus they forget to show respect so that their children can imitate. In fact, regardless of age or status, parents must always show respect for the teachers of our children. This is morality of parents who are responsible for their children's education.
TO ACROSS A RIVER, WE SHOULD BUILD A BRIDGE...
Mr. Hien flicked his cigarette:
- My son failed in college entrance exam again. Now I don't know what to do. Letting him go to vocational training school is so shameful. I invested so much money and effort in his study, but still no success. Meanwhile, I didn't see you invest anything for your son, but he still passed many exams and even got a scholarship. It's amazing! I don't think you were smarter than me, but why did your kid study so well?
Mr. Thuan slowly put down his cup of tea:
- I'm not as wealthy as you're, but I also invest my effort in my kids' study by building a bridge for them.
Mr. Hien was surprised:
- What do you mean "a bridge"?
Mr. Thuan replied:
- You must have forgotten the Vietnamese saying "To cross rivers, we build a bridge; Respect teachers, to raise good kids"
I carefully "invested" my kids with deep respect for their teachers. When my son was hit by his teacher, he came home crying to me. I asked him what happened, then said the teacher was right. I brought him back to school, to apologize to his teacher, and promise not to make mistakes again.
Because I "invested" them with deep respect for their teachers, my kids kept studying well. I do exactly what our ancestors taught.
You, on the other hand, defended your son too much. You once went to school and argued with his teachers. You blamed them for punishing your son by making him stand facing the wall. Your son is bad at school because of your behavior, not because he's stupid or because you have no intelligence genes.
Mr. Hien wistfully watches the smoke rising. After a while, he asked:
- Do you have any way to help him get better?
To which Mr. Thuan replied:
- You can make up for your fault by taking him to visit his former teachers. You must show them deep respect, and ask your son to do that as well, even though the teachers may be younger than you. Who knows, maybe he can get better in the next college exam.
- Right, I'll listen to you.
Nowadays, most families have fewer children, so parents may love their children more. Unfortunately, we often love them in a wrong way. One of the mistakes is to oppose the teachers in front of your kids, making them believe that the teachers are wrong. If your children no longer think the teacher is right, how will they have the motivation to listen to his teachings? That's the logic.
