BOTH PARENTS

Thành took Hương's hand and said:

"My sweetheart, I understand that you are upset when a conflict happens between you and my parents. These kinds of conflicts are unavoidable in a family. Even between flesh and blood members, disagreements exist. However, they have enough love to overcome such problems and get on well together. My parents have always been strict on me since I was a child, and they still scold at me now when I make mistakes. But I am not upset about them because I know my parents love me. They gave birth to me, raised me up, and always do me so many unconditional favors. But you are a daughter-in-law, your love for my parents is not that much, so you always feel hurt when there is a conflict. I understand that so much hurt accumulates in your heart, which wears you down."

"I know you have tried to restrain your anger because you love me. Such a long endurance drains you out. It would help if you go back to your parents for a while to feel better. I will come to see you every couple of days because I cannot leave my parents alone."

"You see, whenever I came to see your parents, I always tried very hard to stay with them all day and found something to help work on. I somehow understand how most parents-in-law feel. They had worked so hard to raise their daughter very well, then the son-in-law just took her away. They feel like they lose something so important in life. I just can show my gratitude to them by my devotion, or sometimes with a gift or doing the housework. "

" Do you remember once your younger brother Tuan was caught because of an illegal race, exactly at the time you and I came to see your parents? All of your father's anger was thrown at me. He scolded me from morning till evening. You see, I tried to stay patient and listened to his anger. I believed that it was a way I could help you show our gratitude to your parents. As you come to stay with me, you do not have many chances to show your gratitude to your parents, so I must do anything to help you show it. I believe that I have enough love for your parents to not feel hurt when there is a conflict. One day, when you can love my parents similarly, you will not feel hurt anymore..."
Hương burst into tears.

To be grateful to parents is the basic humans' morality. No matter how developed society becomes or what technological advancement we get, that gratitude towards parents is unchangeable. Some life perspectives can alter over time, especially due to technology, but some other basic ethics cannot be changed. If they change, we act like animals on the spot.

Parents' mercies and love for their children are immense. While there are some unusual exceptions, that minority cannot be the reason for us to lower the sacred position of parents. Exceptions can exist in any aspects of life and cannot be the standard from which we draw the general principles. Regarding parents' favors, the love and mercies of parents are incomparable.

Moral people are grateful to their parents. When they are little, they obey and give a hand in the housework. They study hard for their parents to be happy. When they grow up, they may not live close to their parents due to their jobs, but the parents are always in their heart. They will come home anytime they have a chance to live beside their parents and take care of them, even for a very short time.

Our parents might not have as much knowledge as we do, but we must be sympathetic and respectful when we want to say something different from their thought. If we are able to take care of our parents when they are old, we absolutely must not claim our credits, otherwise, they will be sad.

Human instinct makes us love our children more than loving our parents. This instinct is very cruel. We must beware to resist it to fulfill our responsibility for our parents. We must love our parents very much.
