You are thoughtful if you ask him about his disease,
the doctor he has come to, the medication he is taking and its side effects and how to resolve them. If you just give him some money for medicine and do nothing more, you have very shallow moral thoughts, and the karmic result should be that later you will be successful at some times but can't have big successes. The reason that you are not much blessed is that you have shallow moral thoughts about helping others.

BE KIND AND THOUGHTFUL
What should we do when seeing a poor, sick person? Often, we give them some money for medicine. We're good to do that, but if we think our help is enough and we boast about it, we are thoughtless people, and our standard of morality is not high. What should we do to have a high standard of morality?
You are thoughtful if you ask him about his disease, the doctor he has come to, the medication he is taking and its side effects and how to resolve them. If you just give him some money for medicine and do nothing more, you have very shallow moral thoughts, and the karmic result should be that later you will be successful at some times but can't have big successes. The reason that you are not much blessed is that you have shallow moral thoughts about helping others.
What about those who think deeply about helping others? In the case above, they also give that man money to buy medicine but also carefully ask about its side effects, and when they discover that the medicine will become harmful if it is used without enough starch and protein, they give more money for the patient to buy food to prevent the side effects of the medicine. It is his thoughtfulness.
We have heard that our great-grandfather was a very virtuous physician. He even gave his poor patients money to buy food when some medicine must be taken when the patients are full. In the past, excellent physicians knew not only the illnesses but also the fates of their patients.
Once, an unfaithful wife asked him to give her poisonous medicine to kill her husband so that she could marry her lover. He quietly gave three tonics, but unexpectedly, the husband died after taking them. The wife happily came to say thanks to the physician. The physician was very confused and couldn't understand why forever.
The truth is, there are many things that must be avoided in oriental medicine. For instance, if a mouse comes and defecates into the pot of cooking medicine, whoever takes this medicine will die right away; the medicine can also become poisonous once a lizard licks it, etc.
Perhaps by accident, the tonics were used with must-be-avoided food or the husband had to die by his fate, so that even tonics could kill him. The physician was very regretful, and he blamed himself for his thoughtlessness. He thought he should have advised the immoral woman to stop her wrongdoing. He pranked her by giving her tonics, but her husband died. He was so sad and furious with himself that he locked all the medicine cabinets and threw the keys into the river to stop being a physician.
On one early morning, someone rushed to his house. Banging on the door, he loudly said, "Please save my wife. She is too painful to give birth." Not awake, he told his grandson, "Bring water to wash face." The man stood outside, heard a few words, and immediately ran away. He rushed to get water to wash his wife's face. Unexpectedly, the wife succeeded in giving birth. The baby was brilliant and handsome. The husband was a fisherman, and when his son was one month old, he caught a big fish and brought it to the physician as a way of saying thanks. He said, "Thanks to you, my wife could give birth to a healthy baby." The physician was very confused and asked for the reason. The man said, "The other day, I came to ask for your help because my wife couldn't give birth to my baby, and you told me to wash her face, I did and she succeeded in giving birth. Today my baby is one month old, and I would like to give you this fish as my thanks.
He contemplated and found many things out of people's control. He wanted this person to be alive, but he died, and he hadn't even treated that person, but she succeeded in giving birth. And when he cut the fish, he was even more surprised to see the keys that he had thrown into the river before. And he realized that he was forced to be a physician again because he was a virtuous man who was not allowed to quit the job that God had given him.
That he gave the patients some money to prevent side effects of the drug taken when they are hungry or to give the husband tonics instead of poison (although the result is beyond humans' prediction)... proved that he was not a shallow man. He was very thoughtful when treating his patients. And often such people go to heaven after their passing. If they are reborn in this world, they will be extraordinary, virtuous people because of their thoughtfulness for others.
