Civilized people practicing meditation to develop a peaceful and tranquil mind

CIVILIZED PEOPLE

A man hesitantly walked into a quiet room and looked around. Mr. Hải approached to greet him and showed him a seat.

"How are you? Are you here for meditation?"
"I'm good, how are you? Yes. My name's Cảnh. I'm Catholic. I'd like to practice meditation to put my mind at peace. I know that people need to get their minds peaceful in this civilization. However, every time people talk about meditation, they suppose it belongs to Buddhism. There appears to be an invisible barrier that blocks people like me from trying and learning more about meditation. I heard you opened this Center of Meditation to be non-religious, so I decided to come here and check it out."

"Yes, you're right. The religious barrier blocks many people from practicing meditation which can help their mind peaceful. Any civilized person should have the opportunity to practice meditation regardless of religions. Meditation is the humankind's common property that is beyond any boundary of any religion."
"Thank you very much. Could you please tell me your meditation method here?"

"Well, my method is based on the six principles. If you want to learn, you should write them down carefully, and think about them twice before you take this practice. Or you can come here to practice."

"The first principle is that the Mind and the Breath are interconnected. If one of them is unstable, the other is unstable. If one of them is calm, the other is calm. If we can't directly keep the mind peaceful, then we can keep the breathing calm first, then the mind will be calm. Keeping the breathing calm is to breathe gently, smoothly and do not try to breathe too much. We inhale a little shorter and exhale a bit longer."

"The second principle is that the Mind and the Body are interconnected. If one of them is roving, the other is roving. If one of them is still, the other is still. In the beginning, if we can't directly keep the mind calm, we can first keep the body motionless but relaxed, and straight. Later, when you've got used to keeping the body peaceful, you will feel that even when you are working, which means your body moves, your mind is still at ease."

"The third principle is that the Mind, the Body, and the Attention are related to one another. If the mind is not roving, the attention is settled on the body. If the mind is all over the place, the attention will be away from the body. If we can't directly control the mind, we should pay attention to the body, do not let our attention drift. We pay attention to the whole body, control the whole body, stay calm on the whole body and feel the whole body including our skin and flesh."

"The fourth principle is that the peace of mind relates to sins and blessings. The more sins we commit, the more turbulent our mind becomes. In contrast, if we create many blessings, our mind is peaceful. Thus, meditation practitioners have to do a lot of good deeds and learn to avoid committing even the tiniest sin."

"The fifth principle is that the peace of mind relates to wrong thoughts and right thoughts. With bad thoughts, our mind is naturally unrestful. On the contrary, righteous thoughts help our minds become calmer. Therefore, practitioners should try to uphold only good thoughts even when nobody knows about those thoughts."

  • "The sixth principle is that practitioners must widen their hearts and open their minds beyond their own creeds. They need to revere any saintly ones whose minds are profoundly tranquil."

  • "These are the six basic principles for the practice towards a peaceful mind. You should contemplate them cautiously to see if they're suitable for you to practice."

  • The guest nodded:

  • "They sound good and reasonable to me. Could you please tell me where you learned this method?"

  • "Well. I used to have a business of real estate and once, I got so stressed out. So, I went to the countryside and by chance met a hermit who taught me this method. Later, when my business became stable, I handed it over to my children and opened this center. I hope to help people who want to practice meditation, of course, for free."

  • "You're right, Mr. Cảnh. Civilized people should practice meditation to put their minds at peace. The peace of mind brings us real happiness."

  • "Is the hermit you mentioned still living in that secluded place?"

  • "I visited him quite often in several years when I first knew him. However, for the ninth time I went there, I could not see him or his hut anymore. I asked some neighbors around there. They said they never saw the man or the hut at all. I was really confused and had to go back."

  • When the world becomes more progressive, humans need to know how to keep our minds peaceful to protect our brains.

  • In religions, there are many methods to practice meditation, most of which are based on belief. The disciples follow what their masters teach them without any common scientific foundation worldwide. However, it is time that all methods should be led by logic and be proven by science. Every method needs to demonstrate its benefits and how it works.

  • Thanks to scientific proof, the practice of meditation all over the world will be led by a common guide instead of being taught quite individually like at the moment. Meditation will be like mathematics, and thus, there people will not create more boundaries due to meditation. Everywhere in the world, people will share the same way of practicing meditation.

  • Many subjects are easier to learn when we are children such as music, languages, and acrobatics. However, meditation requires us to have a certain level of awareness to practice. Teenagers may be able to start practicing meditation. Individuals with lower intellectual ability may take longer to be ready for meditation.

  • Nowadays, countries that teach meditation early in school will have many accomplishments in various fields. A tranquil mind helps people become more intelligent, more moral, more civilized and happier.
