WISDOM OF A PEACEFUL MIND
After the meditation session, everybody hung around together to drink tea and shared their interesting experiences. Mrs. Hang started the discussion:
“My friends! I’ve practiced meditation at Mr. Hai’s meditation hall here to calm my mind for almost two years and I realized many good things have come to my life. At first, I thought meditation could only reduce stress and give me good sleep at night. Later, after some time practicing meditation, I recognized a lot of benefits that go along. First, I seem to be wiser. I used to do things in a hurry and considered everything uncarefully. Now that my mind is calmer with less desire I am able to see things in life very clearly.”
“Once, a business partner invited me to join a project by showing me its incentives and prospects. If it had been me in the past, I would have grabbed that chance without a second thought. This time, I was calm with no desire, so I could see many shortcomings in their plans. Then I discussed the problems with them “The second benefit is that I am living a life with more morality. I used to deal with many things selfishly, but now I have become much more tolerant because I understand the feelings of other people and behave more properly. Thanks to that, I don’t feel regretful at night.”
Mr. Hai added:
“I’m sorry for this interruption, I love the part of understanding the feelings of other people. This stems from the wisdom and morality that meditators can get. Normally, we do to satisfy what we feel. We do everything from our feelings of happiness, sadness, satisfaction, and self-pride. We do everything just for ourselves. Now when our minds are calm, we can recognize other people’s feelings. We can see if they are happy or sad, satisfied or disappointed, hopeful or upset... Naturally, our conscience will make us behave in the right manner which makes other people feel happier. I call this wisdom and morality.”
Mr. Canh contributed to the conversation:
“Once, while I was attending a ceremony in church, I felt that behind me stood someone who was extremely stressed and desperate. I turned back and saw the daughter of my neighbor. She was whispering the prayer but her mind seemed to be wandering somewhere and her eyes were washed with tears. After the ceremony, I waited outside to invite her some coffee.
I asked what happened and what I could do to help her. Probably my sincerity touched her heart. She bursted into tears and confided to me that her boyfriend had left her when knowing that she got pregnant. She didn’t know how to confess her situation to her parents and wanted to kill herself. I then went to see her parents and convinced them to overcome their prejudice to accept her daughter to be a single-mother. I also promised to be the child’s godfather. Thanks to this, everything went on smoothly. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, which made her parents so happy. As I am his godfather and I have prestige in my neighborhood and the parish, nobody has spread any rumors about her situation. Then her caddish boyfriend came back to insist on marrying her because he knew the baby boy was very beautiful. For his parents wanted to have grandkids, they forced him to marry her and take the baby. She and her family came to ask me for advice. Honestly, I had no comments or advice because I have got so tired of marriage. For she insisted on my answer, I said that I didn’t trust in the morality of that caddish guy and was much afraid that he would make her suffer again. Then she refused to come back to him and chose to be a single mom. I just remember Jesus’s teaching in the Gospel, ‘I come to divide you.’ I don’t know if what I did is right. ”
Mr. Hai said:
“ It is good if she feels happy for living the life of a single mom. But thanks to your ability to feel something behind your back, you have saved two lives.”
Someone asked him:
“Mr. Hai, what are your experiences about the power of meditation? Please tell us.”
Mr. Hai said:
“I once heard from Mr. Minh that when we reach a high level of meditation, we will naturally remember that we are nothing, that was the greatest wisdom. I have tried to practice and reached that level. Now, I always stay mindful of my body and aware that there is nothing as me. There appears a confidence in the way I am going and the morals it brings, which cannot be wrong. And it is true that in life, the way I treat people is well appreciated by them.”
Most people misunderstand that the more we think, the more intelligent we become. In fact, the more peaceful our minds are, the more intelligent we are. The formula of intelligence in most cases is that intuition comes first, and proof comes later.
People, who are bustling and hasty, will easily lose their wisdom. People who are sensitive can hardly see things clearly. Only people with calm and unruffled minds can gradually enhance wisdom.
In order for children to study well, they should be encouraged to practice meditation. Usually, children are hyperactive, which is necessary for the development of their body, but they need to practice meditation to calm them down. Human brains will degenerate quickly after the age of 30 unless meditation is practiced. At the age of 50, most people have neurological diseases. The practice of meditation can help prevent human brains from degeneration. It can even improve their brain functions. The benefit that meditation can bring to the nervous system is enormous.
But the best part of meditation is that it brings us morality and wisdom in life. We will become wiser and more tolerant. We can understand others’ feelings. We can have more appropriate behaviors. The more appropriately we treat others, the more safe and secured we feel about ourselves.
Happiness is sometimes just that simple.
