THE DEEP LAYERS OF OUR MINDS

After meditating, everyone came to the living room for some tea. Maybe, because the pure joy of meditation still affected their minds, people remained quiet. Some of them stood up, said goodbye to Mr. Hải and left, while others stayed. Mr. Cảnh asked:

“Bro Hải, I notice that for any day that I do something good for people, I can meditate more easily on that day. Clearly, there’s a close relation between meditation and doing good deeds. Do you guys think so?”

Mrs. Tuyền added:
“I’ve seen this point for a long time. Therefore, I always find something good to do for others every day. Good deeds can foster the practice of meditation.”

Mr. Cảnh said:
“I’ve been practicing meditation for three years. My mind gets peaceful. But it seems like that there are still bad habits lying deep inside. I keep wondering where my bad habits are while my mind is tranquil.”

Mr. Hải said:
“A tranquil mind only reduces your thoughts on the surface level of consciousness. In its deeper layers, there have been a lot of feelings, instincts, attitudes, points of view, and orientations existing for a long time. If anyone is subjective in that peaceful mind, they can make mistakes, and do wrong things terribly then.”

“On the surface level of consciousness, our minds seem to be tranquil. However, in the deep layers of consciousness, there remain our selfishness, greed, desire of sight, competition, false pride, etc. There are two ways to get rid of those bad habits. First, we do good deeds to change ourselves for the better. Second, we vow to make ourselves better every day. Just keep doing both ways, so our hidden bad habits will be cleared gradually.”

“When those bad habits are less and less, our minds can easily go into deeper levels of Ecstasy. To be honest, the current tranquil state of mind is only on the surface.”

Everyone still kept quiet to contemplate his saying. Then, Mr. Cảnh said:
“Dear friends, I’m a Catholic. When I took the practice of meditation, Mr. Hải showed me the six principles. One of them is to respect Those who obtain high levels of meditation. I respect my Jesus, but I don’t know how deep His mind went into meditation.”

Mr. Hải said:
“In the Gospel, there is a narrative telling that once Jesus went on the surface of the sea to visit his disciples, who were fishing. If His mind couldn’t go into deep meditation, He couldn’t go on the water like that. Besides, there were many great philosophers practicing deep meditation. For example, Confucius was calmly playing music while He and his disciples had no food for days. Socrates stood still in deep meditation overnight. Pythagoras specially taught people how to get peace of mind. Lao-tzu showed His extreme peace of mind in His Moral Sutra. They all obtained deep and perfect meditation, and we should pay great homage to them.”

Mrs. Tuyền nodded her head in agreement and asked:
“Then who is your master, bro Hải?”

Mr. Hải smiled and said:
“I’ve told my story for a hundred times, but apparently nobody believes me. I took a vacation in the countryside and by chance, I met Minh who taught me how to practice meditation. I kept going back and forth to see him for years. And the last time I went back, his house had literally disappeared. I asked people around that place, but nobody ever saw him or his house.”
“It sounds like a fairy tale.”

“I just tell you the truth, no more, no less. I miss him, but I don’t know where to find him.”
A tranquil mind and morality have a close connection. The more ethical people are, the more easily for them to attain a tranquil mind. For those who can attain a tranquil mind easily, it is also more likely for them to attain high level of morality.

When the mind stops thinking, it doesn’t mean that there has been a change in morality. Morality lies in the deeper layers of consciousness. We need to practice meditation and train ourselves in morality at the same time, so that we can really understand ourselves. In fact, people can hardly figure out how their souls are.

There is no doubt that people who have tranquil minds are noble and wise. Those who try to practice meditation are leading everyone to a good future. The sooner people all over the world practice meditation to obtain their tranquil minds, the sooner they all live happily.
