GET WHAT YOU WANT

All the people in the hall greeted Xuân with a big applause as she stepped on the platform. She was just crowned the winner of the beauty pageant in Central Vietnam and came back to her hometown. It is an honor for the Youth Union of the province. The criteria for the Miss Beauty award are strict. She must have an attractive appearance, good knowledge and achievements, and high moral behaviors. Xuân was outstandingly qualified in all those aspects.

The party celebrating Xuân's victory lasted until late in the afternoon, when people said goodbye to go home. Being tired, Xuân went to bed early. However, shortly after that, her phone rang constantly.\

"Hello," Xuân answered:
"Hi, it's Thủy, from the Communist Youth Union of ward 12. Sorry for calling you at this late hour. I really admire you. So, please allow me to ask you some questions about your life."
"Yes, Thủy. Please go ahead, I'm listening."

"I notice that the more you grow up, the more beautiful and lovelier you are and the more successful you get. I've known you for 6 years and your constant improvement surprises me. Many people might lose some of their strong points when they grow up, while yours keep still developing. I think you must have a great secret. Could you please share with me?"

Xuân burst into laughter, said:
"Your question is so hard. My story is lengthy and seems spiritual. I don't know how to answer it."
"Please, go ahead. I believe in spirituality."

"When I was in grade 6, there was an odd girl in my class and I did not like her. I strongly wished she would be moved to another class. But months later, I was the one who was moved, not her. I cried bitterly. After that, I kept thinking, I wanted her to be moved, but then I was moved indeed. It was weird. Then I somehow realized that there must be a secret rule controlling our life. It seems what we want for others will return to us."

"Since then, I have made use of that rule in my life and see how things go. I started to wish good things for others, very sincerely. In addition, I also tried to help them. For example, I wished my classmates studied well, shared materials with them, and encouraged them in studying. They made progress at school finally. But in the end, I always got the highest grade among them. I secretly wished my friends had enough food; and sometimes, I gave them cakes and fruits. It turned out I always had delicious food wherever I went."

"I gradually believed more in that secret rule. I tried to open my heart to love more people, and wished everyone would become successful and happy. Anything I found I was able to help, I wholeheartedly tried to help. Day by day, I realized that my soul changed first. I don't want to praise myself, but objectively to say, my mind really became brighter and more tender. Then my face started to look prettier. Good fortune and opportunities came to my life more often."

"So that was everything about my secret. Try to wish all the best things for people very sincerely, and happiness would come to us naturally. My experience!"
"Your story really touches me. You've been living with that beautiful mindset for over 10 years. I should start to do it now. Thank you so much, Xuân."

What we want for others will come back to us. That is the Law of Karma. Anyone nurturing evil intentions to harm others will fall into decay. Shamans using enchanted words to harm people will suffer horrible illness later in their life before they could actually die.

On the other hand, people who are kind-hearted, compassionate, and care about others' happiness will become happier later. Confucius once said: "A great man knows to care about concerns that the world has not been aware of, and feels at ease after everyone is at ease." His saying indeed also means to care for others first.

Our life is usually messed up by envy and jealousy. It will help if we keep our kindness and compassion, and try to wish that people would perform better than we do, be happier than we are. Those wishes may sound weird, but once we practice them with our sincere heart, we will see the beauty they could bring to people around us, and consequently, the good luck that comes back to our life. On the contrary, if we let the selfish instinct take over our heart, we would not care about others' success, even usually expect them to suffer failures, miseries, dishonors, etc. That dangerous nature ruins our hearts and destroys our life day by day.

Now, in an attempt to reverse that selfish instinct, we could practice the habit of wishing others success and happiness. Once that good trait is built into our personality, even if we have not been successful in life yet, we have already gained a fundamental morality that can help us feel peaceful inside. If we know our good wishes for people are the keys to open the doors to many good things in the future, why don't we try to build that cheerful habit? It really costs nothing.
