THE BEAUTY OF THE SOUL

Mr. Sơn raised his hand to greet Mr. Bảy:

"Come sit and drink coffee with us, Bảy."
Mr. Bảy was nice, took Mr. Sơn's hand, sat down and asked for coffee. Mr. Sơn said:
"Bảy, I admire your lifestyle, but I'm curious. You do charity work year round, picking up rubbish on the streets, repairing roads, helping the poor, visiting the elderly... everything. It is good, but why? Everyone dies eventually. Rich or poor, good or bad. Why don't we enjoy ourselves?"

Mr. Bảy replied:
"I heard that you have a special ancient twelve chord zither, is it right?"
"Oh, yes, it is a very rare ancient zither. Every night, I shower, wear nice clothes, burn incense when it's quiet and then I play the zither. I enjoy playing the zither as well as adoring the ancestors. If my wife and children want to listen to me playing, they must be serious about it as well."
"Why do you put in so much effort towards the zither?"
"It's because you don't know music is the beauty of life and soul. I love beauty, I live for beauty, so I put in quite the effort for the zither."

"So do I, I love the beauty of life and soul. I find beauty in charity and morality. It seems like I'm helping others, but in fact, I am helping myself. If there is no one for me to help, I will be sad to death. Whenever I make others happy, I am happy too. If you stop me from doing good deeds, I will jump down the river."
Some do charity because they believe in karma which will grant them a reward. Some do good deeds because they believe that it pleases the God above. Some do charity because they want to win their boss’s heart, people’s hearts, or promote themselves... Lots of reasons. But there are some people who do good deeds because they simply love its beauty in life.

This life is worth living because there is kindness among humans. The place worth living is where people are kind and love each other, not a luxury residence or a five-star resort. Each good deed sowed in life is a flower making life more beautiful. The kindness we release into life is a beautiful picture, a beautiful song that makes this life more worthy to be lived.

Yet, it is necessary that good deeds are rooted from within our hearts. The morality inside our soul is the beauty of our soul. Although the beauty of our soul is invisible, it can be felt by those who are wise and moral. Wise people choose to live morally because they don’t want to live in any other way. They cannot make their souls ugly.

A little selfishness can also make one’s heart ugly. A little bit of greed for success can also make one’s heart dirty. A piece of arrogance can also make one’s heart corrupted. Recognizing this, wise people will always embrace morality because it is the beauty of the soul, and beauty of the soul in itself is happiness.
