Those truly cultivating themselves in morality will see their acting
gradually disappearing. They rarely change their attitudes or put on an act when going through life. If they’re kind to us the first time they meet us, they will later do something for us out of the same kindness. Their extent of happiness will stay the same in prosperity and in poverty. It seems the ethical can’t act very well, while the unethical can be very absorbed in their acting.
CHANGE OF HEART
Long rushed to grab Bá by the collar. Bá turned his head, ducked under Long's arms, and punched his belly. Long turned himself to dodge and tried to get Bá in a hammer lock. Bá twisted himself, then kicked Long in the face. Long released Bá's arm to avoid his kick, and stepped toward to grab Bá's hair... The two people were fighting so fiercely and caused a traffic jam on the bridge. It was chaotic, with cars honking and people shouting.
Finally, Long put a wrist lock on Bá. Pushing him on the ground, Long shouted:
“Is she really worth dying for?”
At that moment, the police came, and both were escorted to the police station. According to their statements, as it turned out, Bá planned to commit suicide by jumping into the river. Long realized that and ran to save him. But both of them were fellow martial artists, so they ended up exchanging blows like that. Luckily, Long won. After paying the fines, they were released and went to a park. Sitting on the bench, Bá sadly told Long:
“She said she would love me forever. How beautiful our love was! We were waiting only for the wedding day. But she suddenly betrayed me. I saw her going to a hotel with her manager. When I rushed to catch them in their acting, she shamelessly said she didn’t love me anymore and asked me to stay away from her life. I felt hurt, as if I had fallen from heaven down to Earth. I looked at her, astonished. She, who was so virtuous and graceful just the day before, suddenly turned into a devil. My feelings are hurt, and my pride is too. A man can’t live with that kind of shame. I must either kill her or kill myself. Killing her is a crime, so I chose to kill myself.”
Long said:
“Committing suicide is a sin of morality. You just throw away your parents’ effort. You throw away all of your teachers’ effort. Who will take care of your parents in their old age? Who will help contribute towards our society? Her betrayal is normal, because she only pretended to love you. She never truly loved you nor that manager. Just wait and see if my words are right.”
Bá was dumbfounded:
“What should I do now?”
“There are still so many people in life who need your love: a woman selling lottery tickets across the street, an old couple living alone in the neighborhood, two orphans boys next door, your young and innocent cousins... There are a lot of people for you to love and help in this life.”
Bá sadly said:
“I had been in a relationship for so long I became indifferent to the people around me. Thank you for saving my life. I’ll find the life I’ve long forgotten.”
People having a change of heart is normal. Sometimes, they change because of the surroundings. Sometimes, they change on their own.
Our surroundings can make us happy or sad. That’s when our minds are affected and changed accordingly.
Sometimes, people can intentionally create their attitudes as life requires. Meeting the boss, we need to be happy. Meeting a potential money borrower, we need to be sad and whiny. Meeting a beautiful person, we need to be nice and upright. Meeting a rival, we need to be tough and aggressive.
In general, everyone is an actor. One can perform a play excellently, or awkwardly. Specifically, those in showbiz are usually professional actors.
When we see someone with a charming smile and upright attitude, know that this charming and nice person may turn out to be a nasty, greedy and annoying person in another situation. If we understand the changing nature of people, we won’t be disappointed when they suddenly betray us.
