A couple standing on a beautiful but uncertain path, symbolizing the hidden challenges of love, marriage, family responsibilities, and the pursuit of happiness.

BEHIND WHAT WE THINK HAPPINESS

When men are in love, especially young men, they often tell their lover “I can’t live without you,” or “Without you, I don’t want to live any longer.” That is because when we grew up, we thought that love is our real happiness. Do you still think it is correct?

As for those who have experienced youth, do they still consider that love is happiness? – No, because behind that love is marriage. And when entering into married life, they don’t feel as happy as the love in the beginning. Their married life has a great number of things that worry them. Even when they don’t have any quarrels, they are burdened with their responsibilities.

Have husbands and wives become saints yet? – No, they haven’t. They are still ordinary people who are full of greed, hatred, ignorance, and selfishness... so, throughout their married life, they experience a lot of suffering caused by the human nature of greed, hatred, ignorance, and selfishness. You see, behind love there is marriage, responsibilities to family, conflicts, arguments and more. And many people who end their marriage in divorce still have suffering.

In this life, it’s hard for a couple to live together until their end. This rate in Vietnam is above sixty percent, but in foreign countries, it is about ten percent.

You see, not all people have everlasting love, and love and marriage is something predestined. Love is the debt of gratitude from a past life and love between a man and a woman is the clearest expression of this kind of debt. You will fall in love with a person to whom you owe a debt of gratitude. Thus, when you pay off your debt, your love for that person goes away. So, the love between men and women is unreal and just a mean for them to pay debt to each other. And when they pay off their debts, their love will come to its end.

Once, a boy brought a girl to us and said: “Dear Master, I just helped this girl escape her marriage. Her family forced her to marry a man that she doesn’t love. That’s why I helped her escape her family.” We looked at her and found that she doesn’t love anyone, so how could she get married. We then added: “And no one loves her.” We knew this by observing her. In fact, there are many people like this girl, they have no causal conditions to love or marry someone. If they try to marry someone, then they will become divorced after a month, or five years, or even twenty years. Their marriage will be broken in divorce. The truth is that behind love there is something unstable and uncertain, which causes our tiredness and suffering. We cannot rely on our love, because the marriage is suffering. Suppose you are lucky and marry a good person, but how about your children. If your children are bad, you will have a lifetime of suffering because of them. You cannot be merciless to abandon them because you are their parents, so you will be miserable because of them for the rest of your life.

The young think love is happiness just because of their immaturity and their hope that their hearts will be filled with happiness if they live together. However, the time they live with each other is the time of unhappiness, anger and resentment.
