Many people disregard simple manual labor work,
and consider it very low. It is surprising that manual labor is a basis of intellectual work and helps intellectual work become stable. Furthermore, a person who not only has a manual labor job but also gets higher education can have jobs more easily in spite of nobody's notice.

THE SEARCH FOR A JOB
Hung stopped his motorbike because he came across Mr. Binh, who was working with the mix of mortar to repair a damaged part on the road. Hung shouted:
- Hi uncle Binh, why do you have to work hard like that? I heard that you retired last month. Who paid for you to repair this thing?
Mr. Binh stopped working and said:
- Just because I like to do this. These potholes can cause accidents for passers-by, especially in the evening. Instead of waiting for local authority, I'm trying to fix the road. It's just like I'm fulfilling a citizen's responsibility. Where are you going?
Hung replied:
- I'm looking for a job. I'm so frustrated. I have been unemployed for over the past few months. As I remember, you worked in the Department of Labor and was responsible for seeking jobs for young people like me; if you hadn't retired, I could have got so much support. Could you share with me some experience or anyone who can help me?
Mr. Binh said:
- My friends still work there – in the same position I was in, so I can tell them to help you. However, now I'd like to share with you my own experience after 20 years of observing many people seeking for work. We should come to that tree, sit down and I'll tell you.
Then, they sat under the tree, and Mr. Binh asked Hung:
- What do you think that makes a person employed or fired?
Hung said:
- Uncle, I've read many books about this matter: market rules, economic rules, rules of supply and demand, employees or employers' abilities, and some certain sentiment factors. It's a long story. You were in charge of these things. You know it better than me, don't you?
Mr. Binh said:
- I'm not talking about what books already showed or what you did know. I'm talking about what I have found out. It's amazing. It seems to be a secret rule besides the rules showed in books.
Hung looked at Mr. Binh and waited for him to continue. Mr. Binh said:
- I find out that everyone’s jobs – or more exactly, each person's job – is like a system from the bottom to the top, from the ground to the high floor, from the body to the brain. Whoever having this full system can get a stable job. Whoever lacking the basic foundation will lead to unemployment.
- So you mean that I lack the basic foundation, which means having no jobs. But, what is the basic one? I don't understand it.
- I already had conversations with many people about their jobs, and I realized that anyone who has the basic foundation of simple manual labor can get stable with their intellectual jobs. And, anyone who only works in an office without any simple manual work can become jobless easily. Candidly, I don’t know why. I only secretly made my own statistics and found this invisible rule.
Many people came to my office to get support for seeking jobs, and everytime I would always talk with them carefully. If a person never experienced simple labor, I would always advise them to look for any simple manual job first even though they had a university degree that was only suitable for office work. Many people listened to me, and later they could find stable jobs in the office.
Some people blamed me for unreasonable advice; they left and decided to apply for jobs on their own. Then, they often failed or got employed for a short time and then were fired.
Hung looked pensive for a while, then spoke:
- It seems that I also experience this situation. I haven't done simple manual work much. My parents raised me up then sent me to school. After graduating, I got a job in an office that was suitable for my degree. Then I became jobless soon after.
But, I knew some people still get a stable job after graduating without going through any simple manual work at all.
Mr. Binh said:
- I used to think like that before. But, when I continuously researched, I knew that those people already did their household chores, or there're some people working in an office while having other part-time manual jobs. They all have the full system from low to high, so they can work stably.
Understanding this, I never disregard manual labor. After working in an office, I always try to work with something needing manual work to fulfill the system. That's why I've still repaired damaged roads while in retirement.
Hung thoughtfully said:
- I think I should stop applying for jobs now. I'll follow you to repair roads for a short time. I want to see what will happen.
Many people disregard simple manual labor work, and consider it very low. It is surprising that manual labor is a basis of intellectual work and helps intellectual work become stable. Furthermore, a person who not only has a manual labor job but also gets higher education can have jobs more easily in spite of nobody's notice.
Let’s try it and see what will happen.
